"Missed broken bone"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child went in with possible broken scaphoid bone. They couldn’t see anything and said it was just bruised and come back in a week if it was still bad. My child went back a week later to be told that they could see the break and the original x-ray and didn’t do another one and they put my child straight into cast that broke after two days as it was only a half cast.

They went back in to get cast redone for the doctors to say we don’t know why you are in a cast, we want another x-ray. They did another x-ray put my child back in a cast, then went to the orthopaedics when they put a proper cast on as the second half cast was breaking again.

My child had another appointment a week and a half later to be told there’s two breaks and I don’t know how anyone missed it. How is this possible?

Hi scorecardbn43,

I'm sorry to see what happened, it sounds really frustrating. When our ED doctors order X-rays, they interpret them on the spot, and a specialist radiologist reports on those images (usually a day or so) later. That might be what happened here, and why a repeat x-ray wasn't done.

There is clearly more to the story, like the doctors not knowing why your child was immobilised and problems with the plasters, and I'd like to investigate this case. If you would like me to do this, our Regional Coordinator of Consumer Feedback, is on (08) 9753 6537 or email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au and we can get that ball rolling.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Hugh Mitenko, MD, CCFP-EM (Canada) | Deputy Emergency Medical Director

WA Country Health Service South West, Bunbury Hospital
