"Maternity ward after birth"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as the patient),

After a change of plans as my waters had been broken for too long to continue my homebirth we made our way to Fiona Stanley hospital.

In my opinion, the first midwife we met who put the monitor on was horrible, I’ve never felt so ill treated before. This person was the senior midwife, and to hear that later on was an absolute shock. They were rough, hardly asked for consent and in my opinion was just plain rude, this was my first baby, I was already nervous about being in the hospital. And they've made me scared to ever go back there. But I’m glad to they are no longer a practicing midwife.

My birth alone was fantastic as I had my CMP midwife with me, Everything went well.

After is where it started going down hill, first doctor who assessed my baby was, in my opinion, useless, and I felt a lot of fear tactics were used - this was all because my baby was small - I’m also small.

They tried telling me to stay in hospital for 24hrs to make sure babies sugars were good, the first test was fantastic, we should’ve gone home.

We basically weren’t allowed to.

Then we got transferred over to the postnatal part of the ward, into a shared room, at this point I’d been awake for well over 24hrs, I didn’t get to sleep because the aircon was broken and the baby next to us was crying as well as the parents being loud.

Then I was told we’d have to wait till Bubs next feed to do the next glucose test. We waited and waited and waited finally my doula had to come back to the hospital to get someone to actually come to us. Finally after over 9hrs in the hospital after Bub was born another doctor came in, I felt practically threatened us about not staying, we said we’re going home. Then several hours later a 3rd doctor came in and I was given papers to sign that stated I was going against medical advise to leave. All because my baby was small - this is a baby that actually put on weight after birth never lost it.

To add to all this they completely lost my file and took forever to find my baby's. It felt like they were purposely delaying us.

Wont ever recommend this hospital to anyone, especially a first time mum.

Baby was born in the early hours of the morning, we left the hospital 23 hours later.

Dear januaryzx74,

I am disheartened to hear about your recent experience at the FSH Maternity Ward. You have raised several important issues that we would like to explore further. It is clear that this situation does not align with our commitment to providing exceptional, patient-centred care, and is not reflective of the values we strive for.

I invite you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 during business hours or via email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au with your information to allow us to investigate this further.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
