"Wonderful staff who helped me avoid a doctor who makes me feel unsafe"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

My spouse took me into ED with uncontrollable vomiting & other unpleasant symptoms which was making me dehydrated and miserable.

We asked if a known ED doctor was on roster and they were.

I explained I did not want to see that doctor and then started feeling very worried about who I could see.

The staff asked me why and I got very upset. They very kindly provided feedback forms and arranged for another doctor to see me. All staff I dealt with were at all times kind, courteous and showed me compassion and care. They sorted me out efficiently and following protocols I’m aware of. Thank goodness for these wonderful nurses, doctors and other staff and I’m so glad there are many good people and, in my opinion, only one active and vociferous “doctor” at this hospital. I feel the rest of the staff should not be required to compensate for this person.

Dear novemberfb87

Thank you for sharing your story about your time in the Albany ED. Whilst it’s a shame your unpleasant symptoms led to you to our hospital, it is lovely to hear that you felt supported and cared for when you were there.

We have forwarded a link to your Care Opinion story to the leadership team in ED so that they can share your feedback and sentiments. We are immensely proud of the team here at Albany Hospital and know that they care deeply for their patients and the broader community.

On a small side note, I was a little disconcerted that the staff felt it necessary to ask you why you wanted to avoid a particular doctor as our practice is to accommodate patient requests where possible, irrespective of the reason. We will also remind staff that there is no need to ask why a patient doesn’t want to be treated by a certain individual.

I hope you have fully recovered and are doing well.

Best wishes

Wendy McKinley

Director, Albany Health Campus

Dear Wendy,

I’m sad to see that the message you picked up from my original complaint was to find fault with the ED staff who I felt were truly wonderful. My original intent was to make you and the rest of WACHS aware that I feel unsafe attending ED because you employ a person who I believe to be an active and vociferous “doctor”. Please ensure my message is taken into account as its original intention and that ED staff are not held to account for a situation I believe has been caused by management continuing to employ an unsuitable doctor.

Thank you.
