About: Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Midwest

(as a service user),

I have an appointment to see a NeuroSurg recently, it states on my appointment letter the app is with the Neurosurgical Team. Location: Physiotherapy Department A Block Ground Floor..

I had a phone call today from PATS Carnarvon who have rejected my claim for assistance.

I went into pats office in Carnarvon recently who gave me forms to fill out. This is the 2nd time this has happened. The 1st time I had to pay my own way to and from Perth and my accommodation because PATS refused to pay anything to help me.  I can't drive or go in the bus as it it too far to sit for that amount of time. I have a bulging disc in my back.

Thank You

Dear giftsg55

Thank you for reaching out to us on Care Opinion.

I was very sorry to read of the challenges you’ve faced seeking Allied Health treatment that isn’t accessible to you closer to home.

The Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS) provides financial subsidies for eligible WA country residents to reduce the cost of accessing the closest specialist medical services that are not available locally. An eligible medical specialist is a medical practitioner who:

Is registered with Medicare Australia as a specialist.

Is registered with AHPRA as a specialist within the field of the recipient’s appointment.

Is employed as a specialist by a hospital or health service, including doctors in training.

Referrals to other health professionals, for example allied health (speech pathology, physiotherapy, podiatry, clinical psychology, occupational therapy, audiology and pathology), dentists and nursing professionals are not covered by PATS.

If you would like further information regarding PATS eligibility we have a great website with some very clear FAQ’s located at WA Country Health Service - Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - PATS

I would also be happy to speak with you about your PATS application and provide any advice I can that may assist you. My name is Karen Street, I am the PATS Coordinator Midwest, you can contact me on 9956 1962.

Kind regards

Karen Street
