"Toxic ward culture"

About: Joondalup Private Hospital

(as the patient),

I have been to Joondalup health campus several times as a patient and as a visitor. To both the private and public side. Most recently I have been to H3 which is a private orthopaedic/surgical ward. While there I noticed a severe lack nurses of one gender on that ward and from observations by myself and my partner I can more than guess why. Bullying appears to me to be rife on H3. The one nurse of the specific gender who appears to work there regularly, looks to me to be the target of gender based discrimination and bullying. From all observations they appear to be a diligent worker, with a compassionate approach. My partner and I have observed a group of nurses actively bullying this nurse, either by verbally berating them or refusing to assist when asked for help. I am shocked to have seen such behaviour from staff who are supposed to be in a caring role. I’m hoping that the nurse leaves the apparent bullying and toxic environment soon and goes to a hospital or ward where I feel they will be appreciated.

Dear Nursing has changed,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. I am saddened to read of your observations whilst being a patient in our hospital. I would like to apologise for your experiences and express my gratitude for you taking the time to advocate for this particular staff member.

The events that you describe do not align with our Ramsay Healthcare Diversity and Inclusion Policy or Code of Conduct. All staff undertake mandatory training in relation to these key organisational, behavioural and workplace culture requirements. They are also made aware of our robust Grievance and Harassment Policy which provides support to our staff to protect them from workplace bullying.

I would value the opportunity for you to assist us with the investigation of your concerns, as we do take reports of this type of behaviour very seriously. This will enable us to address staff support that may be needed and provide additional training, education and feedback as required. If you are able to discuss your concerns in more detail, we would like to invite you contact the consumer liaison team at consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au or by phone on 9400 9672.

I would like to apologise again for your experience and I hope that your recovery is going well.

Kind regards,

Mary Ferrier.

Director of Clinical Services
