"Unprofessional service and medical attendance"

About: Jurien Bay Health Centre

(as the patient),

I needed to attend my Local Jurien Bay ED with my partner due to having an accident playing with my dog which cause the base of my thumb to be torn open and the wound being very deep.

On arrival me and partner push the nurse attendance button and had the nurse on call greet us.

On explaining on what happen and possibly medical treatment I may needed to be seen to, I also tried to give my medical history as I am a chemotherapy patient.

The nurse kept shutting me and my partner down

Telling us we don’t need to explain my chemotherapy history as they are already aware and dealt with it before. They wouldn’t accept my chemotherapy card or my oncologist details either.

The nurse passed us through the administration form to which we started to fill out as well between talking to them to which they kept staying they didn’t need us to keep telling them my medical conditions and the possible of high infection rate or fact my blood is very thin and I could bleed out. We also tried to inform the nurse that we had rang my oncologist and he was waiting for the ED to make contact to him to give instructions on how to proceed but they were seemingly not interested and kept shutting us down.

After we handed the form back through the window they then ask me for my name not even bothering to pick up the form to which I told them my name and date of birth.

The nurse the told us there no point us waiting here and to head through to Perth as there nothing they could do for me, they kept telling me the waiting times were well above 2hr and that there wouldn’t be anything they could do for me I was wasting our timing sitting here and would be quicker heading to Perth which is a 2hr drive is self.

At this point we were still standing in the waiting room no one had come to check my thumb I was still holding the open wound with my other hand and sleeve of my shirt.

I felt the nurse was very dismissive and abrupt and quick to shut both me and partner down.

They went to walk away from the window and I had to request if they would at least check the wound and clean it for me to travel

They huff and said yes and sure come through to the back room.

Once I was taken into a treatment room we were joined by a second nurse that did the cleaning and dressed my thumb.

The first nurse stood there and kept telling me as to why I was wasting my time being admitted here and then as asked me what cancer I was being treated for to which I responded breast cancer.

They then told me their own experience comparing our two situation which I felt very uncomfortable with as it was very unprofessional.

After this experience I felt like I was not wanted or to be dealt as it was to much hassle

No one wanted to listen or even wanted to check my thumb before travel

I was pretty distress from the experience.

Dear liberatorht64,

I was saddened to hear of your recent experience when you attended Jurien Bay Emergency Department.

Your experience is not how we expect patients to be treated here, and I am so sorry that this happened to you.

I would be grateful if you could contact me personally regarding this incident so that I can further investigate and ensure that your feedback is addressed appropriately.
