Dr James Munro is Chief Executive of Care Opinion, the UK’s non-profit online feedback service for health and social care. His background is clinical medicine, public health, and health services research. After 13 years in health service research at the University of Sheffield, James joined Care Opinion (then Patient Opinion) in 2006 to help build the public online feedback platform which now serves the UK, Ireland and Australia.

As CEO since 2014, he leads a small team united by a passion to make it safe and simple for people to share feedback about their care in ways which lead to learning and change.

My experience of person-centred care

“My work life started out in medicine. Inevitably, over the years I came to experience healthcare in many contexts: as a father (two of my children were born by c-section), as a son (my mother had Parkinsons for many years, and both parents developed dementia), as well as on my own account (hospitalised with a classic old-fashioned lobar pneumonia). So I know how scary healthcare can be, and how hard it is to raise concerns about the care of a loved one. When I look back to my time as a junior doctor, I wish I’d known then what I know now: that what matters is kindness, listening, clear information and explanation. I wish we’d had something like Care Opinion back then. I might have learnt this sooner.”
