"My father’s treatment"

About: Royal Melbourne Hospital

(as a relative),

My father had major brain surgery. The nurses I met were lovely.

In my opinion, the communication between the hospital and the family, and other health practitioners was appalling to say the least.

Dear neptunehw53,

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you found our nursing staff to be lovely and I will ensure that your comments are fed back. The communication issue you have raised is a very important one. We appreciate the importance of keeping family informed about the progress of a loved one and all wards receive information about how they perform from feedback surveys that we conduct on a regular basis as well as those conducted by the State Government. We use this information to emphasise how important it is to ensure that information is delivered in a timely and understandable way. Our doctors are expected to complete discharge summaries within 24 hours of a patient's discharge. We use a template that includes relevant information and test results. I am not sure what part of the communication process with your father's health care providers you found to be concerning, but I would be happy to look into this specifically if you provide further details to our consumer liaison team. Your comments indicate that we don't always get it right and that we need to continue to improve.

Our consumer liaison team can be contacted at the following email address: consumerliaison@mh.org.au

Once again thank you for taking the time to let us know your opinion and I hope your father is doing well after his surgery.

Kind regards,

George Braitberg
