"Preventing influenza in hospital spaces"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

We have been in Perth Children's Hospital for two weeks. Almost every day we are seeing people with shocking coughs in the clinic areas, in the main atrium and entering the wards.

It would be great to see a stand at each entrance with hand gel, masks and a banner asking people who are sick to please wear a mask and use hand gel entering and exiting the hospital, the ward and clinic.

When I’ve been sick in the past I have stayed home and FaceTimed my teenager several times a day.

I know not everyone can leave their child alone and may not have family close to be with them, so please consider wearing a mask.

41 flu related deaths in WA alone! It's quite scary for cystic fibrosis families.

Dear rhinonf55,

Thank you for your comments and please be assured, I understand your concern. We have hand sanitiser dispensers available throughout the hospital, including general public areas, clinical areas, and patient rooms. Masks are available on request in the Emergency Department and on all wards. We will investigate further steps we can take, as per your suggestions, to increase awareness of the importance of hand hygiene and other measures in stopping to spread of the flu. I will update you once we have taken action. Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards

Dr Victor Cheng

Dear rhinonf55

I would like to update you on the actions we have taken since your post. In addition to masks being available in the Emergency Department and on every ward, we have made masks available at the front reception desk.

We have updated our public information screens to ask patients, families, visitors and staff to be vigilant in stopping the spread of the flu by washing their hands regularly using the hand sanitising gel dispensers available around the hospital.

A second slide asks people to help in protecting our patients, families and staff by postponing visits where possible if they have a cough, sore throat, runny nose or fever, and lets people know regarding the availability of masks.

There is also a message on our telephone on-hold system with this information.

Thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Kind regards
Dr Aresh Anwar
