"Inconsistent care"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

I had a fall and broke both my ankles, I was transferred from another hospital to Fiona Stanley Hospital Short Stay Unit until I had surgery to fix my right ankle, overall it was ok. I woke up in the Orthopaedic Ward after surgery in a room by myself which was great because of the pain and being so tired, I could rest.

I was there for a few days, then at 9 pm on the Sunday night I got taken out of this room back to Short Stay Unit, which I felt was so busy and that the nurses were run off their feet. I was very upset as I wasn’t getting any rest and I was there for 5 days.

Overall it was ok, there were 3 nurses who were fantastic but I felt others were too busy which I understand but I was relying on them, being that I was unable to walk. It was debilitating, to say the least. The doctors and surgeons who did my surgery were fantastic and I can’t thank you all enough.

Just my care in the Short Stay Unit raised my concerns, not the best experience.

Dear likeablexj75,

I am sorry to hear that your recent experience in the Short Stay Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital was not a positive one and I apologise that your move from the Orthopaedic ward to Short Stay was at a late hour.

Whilst we do try to avoid patient movements late in the evening, it is sometimes necessary to accommodate acute patients from the Emergency Department. The decision to transfer patients to the Short Stay Unit is based on their clinical condition and the expectation that they will be ready for discharge in the next day or two.

I recognise that moving patients multiple times during their stay is not ideal and we do minimise this as much as possible. This is especially difficult during the busy winter period when demand for hospital beds is high. I can assure you that one of our key priorities at the moment is focusing on innovations to minimise bed moves whilst providing appropriate care for our emergency patients.

The Short Stay Unit is a fast paced surgical ward with its layout and design adding to the noise level. Despite the fast pace, our staff aim to provide consistent high level patient-centred care and I am glad to hear that you experienced great clinical care on the ward.

I understand that you have made contact with our Patient and Family Liaison Service and if you have any issues that you wish to be investigated further please let us know.

I apologise for any distress you experienced during your admission and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Yours sincerely

Neil Doverty
