"Maternity care after childbirth"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as a relative),

My sister has recently given birth and needs help with feeding baby and pain relief as all new mums do. Most of the staff are lovely and willing to help but I believe she is often left in pain or unable to feed baby due to a lack of support. I feel this appears to be due to a busy ward which I understand but if there are staffing issues, I believe this needs to be addressed. New mums already feel overwhelmed and anxious. In my opinion, the lack of support and assistance puts babies and mums at risk I believe, of emotional and physical harm.

Dear encryptionice97,

Thank you for reaching out via Care Opinion. Part of our postnatal care is the provision of assistance with breastfeeding, pain relief as required and overall physical and emotional support. The midwifery team are very disappointed if your sister feels as though she has a lack of support and assistance, and strongly urge her to speak with her care team.

Alternatively, the Patient and Family Liaison Service can advocate on her behalf and can be contacted on 6152 4013.

We look forward to hearing from your sister very soon.

Thank you,

Neil Doverty
