"2nd planned c-section - another scar"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as the patient),

Recently attended FSH for a scheduled c-section (second pregnancy) so I already have a scar. I was under the impression that the surgeon would use my previous incision / scar for this c-section, however I have since looked at my scar and I have a second / new scar directly above my original one. I am shocked that no one told me or warned me. I was not informed at all that a new scar would be made. The surgeon etc did not tell me after the surgery either. I want to know why I have another scar and why the first scar was not used for this c-section like it seemed I was lead to believe.

Dear libra10,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story via the Care Opinion Australia platform.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on the birth of your baby, I hope you both are doing well. I am sorry to hear of the shock of gaining another scar. As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform; we are unable to review your medical notes to determine why the previous incision site was not used. It is not always guaranteed that the same scar line is used however if you would like a review and debrief the Obstetrics and Gynaecology team will be happy to review you in their clinic. If you would like to discuss this with the department; please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 during business hours or via email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
