"Family Birthing Centre - KEMH"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Family Birth Centre

(as the patient),

I applied to birth through the FBC after hearing stories from people who couldn't fault their experience at the FBC. I was welcomed with open arms with being outside the KEMH catchment and not wanting to birth in my area.

The midwife I was assigned was Georgia. From our first antenatal appointment I knew my baby and I were in safe and loving hands. Every appointment was thorough but also had the personal touch like Georgia was one of your friends. She went above and beyond making sure i knew I could contact her at anytime with questions or any concerns throughout the entire pregnancy/after birth. She is an amazing midwife and my husband and I are so very appreciative that she was assigned to us.

The FBC has a calm and homely environment  and you are always greeted with a friendly smile. The other midwives always say hello and introduce themselves.

Unfortunately my birth plan didn’t go ahead at the FBC and I ended up birthing at KEMH due to medical concerns. Midwives Claire and Georgia from FBC were there for us for the Labour and birth and I am so grateful that we had their continued support and they followed us to KEMH. Especially after having Georgia’s support throughout the pregnancy and becoming someone I valued.

The support didn’t stop there. Midwives Claire, Kate and Georgia came to visit us at home for the 4 days after we got discharged from hospital. I found the support very much needed in the early days and we learnt so much from each of the women.

The midwives at the FBC are very special women who all have similar views which align with the women who go through the centre. I would love the opportunity to be able to attend the FBC for future pregnancies due to the love and support we experienced throughout the pregnancy and birth of our daughter. I could not recommend Georgia and the FBC enough. It’s a very special place and I miss my regular visits.

Dear magpiejm63,

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience with the King Edward Memorial Hospital’s Family Birth Centre (FBC).

I am so heartened to hear that you felt safe and supported during your care at the FBC. Although you describe medical concerns that made it necessary to birth in the main hospital, I’m so happy to hear that having Claire and Georgia from the FBC alongside you was so helpful and reassuring during what must have been a frightening time. It is also great to hear that you received the same level of care and support during the postnatal period and your recovery at home. Georgia, Claire and Kate will be so happy to hear your story and know the positive impact they had during your pregnancy, birth, and post-natal period.

Once again, thank you for sharing your story. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Barbara Lourey
