"Partner's breast care journey"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as a carer),

Hi, my partner (with two young children) passed away recently from metastatic breast cancer. She was diagnosed around 11 months before, so unfortunately her breast cancer was very aggressive.

Timeline:

* Gave birth to our second child

* When breastfeeding, she started to have pain 2 months later and assumed it was a milk filled duct.

* To ensure there was nothing sinister (as the pain in her breast had been going on for more than a few weeks), my partner saw a lactation consultant the following month. The lactation consultant said there was nothing to worry about which put my partner's mind at ease

* She saw a GP a few weeks later as pain persisted, and was recommended therapeutic ultrasound and fit right physio a month later.

* She then had a breast ultrasound on the following month, and nothing came up

* She had a fine needle aspirate a few weeks later. Further investigation was required as minor findings noted of something that might not be a milk filled duct.

* Breast care surgeon consult the following week

* Core biopsy breast the day after

* Diagnosed with breast cancer the following week

This is not to lay blame as in the end, we both knew the cancer was highly aggressive and probably would have taken her life anyway.

My partner didn't want to say anything whilst she was alive but I believe it would have been great if some learnings could come out of this process (and better training potentially be provided - but understand this case might be rare). I believe it would have been useful that the lactation consultant didn't dismiss fears of something more sinister, and maybe mentioned that if there are concerns, to progress it somehow.

Dear eridanuswd39,

I am so sorry to read of the death of your partner. This clearly happened very quickly, and I hope that you have all of the supports that you require for yourself and young family. If you require information regarding support services, please get in touch with our Patient and Family Liaison Service (PFLS) who can assist you to navigate services available (Monday to Friday 8.30 am – 4.30 pm on 6152 4013 or anytime via FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au).

I’d like to thank you for providing such a clear chronology of events, and for the fact that you are respectfully trying to help us improve the care we provide. I truly appreciate the time you have taken to share your and your partner’s experience.

We would like to properly look into all of the circumstances regarding the care provided to your partner, particularly from our Lactation Consultants, so that we can look at how we could learn from your partner’s experience and at ways we could improve (as you have suggested). However, we really do need more details such as your partner’s name or medical record number. If you are willing, I’d encourage you to phone PFLS with this information, and they can pass it on to the Nursing and Midwifery executive team.

I wish you and your young family all the best for your future, and please, if you do require advice regarding support services, do reach out.

Warm regards,

Neil Doverty.
