I was lucky enough to have a wonderful midwife, Olivia, through the Family Birth Centre at KEMH. Throughout all my prenatal appointments she was caring, she was accommodating with my other two children attending and provided true midwifery care. She always presented me with my options, the places to find research so I could make informed choices in relation to tests and preparation for birth. Then the actual birth she was supportive during early labour via text and phone calls, then during the night, came to the birth centre to attend my birth. She supported my wishes with quietness and darkness, while continuously monitoring me and my baby. She was supportive of my husband and even my children after the delivery, by carrying out my wishes of my son being able to cut the baby’s cord. At no stage did I feel unsafe or unheard or pressured. It was like I had a good friend there helping me with my birth.
I also want to note, that the few times I called Olivia on her days off, I spoke to other midwives in her team and they were equally as companionate, professional and attentive as Olivia. The same goes for those that provided some of my post natal care. Even though I didn’t know them they were equally as caring and I also felt like they were friends. The birth centre truly has great people working there as midwives. Which has left me feeling supported and happy about the birth of my third baby. I wish more women could have access to continued care provided by midwifes, so they too could feel the way I feel about birth: like I’ve achieved the impossible! A midwife like Olivia makes all the difference!
